Automatic computation of pebble roundness using digital imagery and discrete geometry

چکیده
The shape of sedimentary particles is an important property, from which geographical hypotheses related to abrasion, distance of transport, river behavior, etc. can be formulated. In this paper, we use digital image analysis, especially discrete geometry, to automatically compute some shape parameters such as roundness, i.e. a measure of howmuch the corners and edges of a particle have been worn away. In contrast to previous work in which traditional digital images analysis techniques, such as Fourier transform, are used, we opted for a discrete geometry approach that allowed us to implement Wadell’s original index, which is known to be more accurate, but more time consuming to implement in the field. Our implementation of Wadell’s original index is highly correlated (92%) with the roundness classes of Krumbein’s chart, used as a ground-truth. In addition, we show that other geometrical parameters, which are easier to compute, can be used to provide good approximations of roundness. We also used our shape parameters to study a set of pebbles digital images taken from the Progo basin river network (Indonesia). The results we obtained are in agreement with previous work and open new possibilities for geomorphologists thanks to automatic computation. & 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Manifestations of Non Linear Roundness in Analysis, Discrete Geometry and Topology
Some forty years ago Per Enflo introduced the nonlinear notions of roundness and generalized roundness for general metric spaces in order to study (a) uniform homeomorphisms between (quasi-) Banach spaces, and (b) Hilbert’s Fifth Problem in the context of non locally compact topological groups (see [24], [25], [26], and [27]). Since then the concepts of roundness and generalized roundness have ...
متن کاملObject-Based Classification of UltraCamD Imagery for Identification of Tree Species in the Mixed Planted Forest
This study is a contribution to assess the high resolution digital aerial imagery for semi-automatic analysis of tree species identification. To maximize the benefit of such data, the object-based classification was conducted in a mixed forest plantation. Two subsets of an UltraCam D image were geometrically corrected using aero-triangulation method. Some appropriate transformations were perfor...
متن کاملAutomatic Interpretation of UltraCam Imagery by Combination of Support Vector Machine and Knowledge-based Systems
With the development of digital sensors, an increasing number of high-resolution images are available. Interpretation of these images is not possible manually, which necessitates seeking for practical, fast and automatic solutions to solve the environmental and location-based management problems. The land cover classification using high-resolution imagery is a difficult process because of the c...
متن کاملHierarchical Discrete Medial Axis: application to fast discrete object visualization and analysis
In digital geometry, the study of a multiresolution representation of digital objects has been carried out (using an homotopic thinning) [8]. This hierarchical structure does not change the medial axis (i.e. the balls radii) of the shape on the first stage, and provides the medial axis pruning. In this PhD, we would like to develop a hierarchical structure which, as in the continuous case, is f...
متن کاملFeasibility of detecting and localizing radioactive source using image processing and computational geometry algorithms
We consider the problem of finding the localization of radioactive source by using data from a digital camera. In other words, the camera could help us to detect the direction of radioactive rays radiation. Therefore, the outcome could be used to command a robot to move toward the true direction to achieve the source. The process of camera data is performed by using image processing and computa...
